Maps of Évora Public Library

The collection of maps in Évora Public Library includes maps of all continents, to a greater or lesser extent, but most of the maps represent the territory of Portugal, the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores, and still the Portuguese colonies. From Alentejo there are only 25. The extreme dates of collection equals: [1675-1729] - 1974.

Many of these are unique maps, manuscripts, indispensable for the study of the places history represented in them. Other maps are printed, less rare, but no less interesting from a historical and cultural perspective.

This digital collection was born from a proposal to a student of Master in Archives, Libraries and Information Science, who treated in his dissertation the inventorying, cataloging and digitization of these documents. Before they were forgotten within the walls ofthe Public Library of Évora. Many of the maps presented here are reserved materials, only retrievable upon request to the Public Library of Evora, subject to approval.
