International Seminar 'Thinking about consciousness, market and sovereignty in the work and precedents of Martín de Azpilcueta'

> 14 JULY 2023 | University of Évora, Espírito Santo College (Faculty Room)

The seminar will bring together a range of specialists who have dedicated themselves to the study of the work of the Navarran humanist Martín de Azpilcueta (1492-1586), alongside scholars who research medieval themes and topics that are essential to the construction of his doctrines, which can rightly be called intellectual precedents to the Salmantine doctrine in modern times. His work is related to a wide range of issues, both spatial and chronological, touching on questions inherited from medieval thought that remained robust questions for a long time in the history of political doctrines, to the point of opening many of the demands of the Counter-Reformation period and even extending to the last stages of modern culture up until the 18th century. It is, therefore, in this spirit of the epochs that the meeting will take place in the famous historical building of the Colégio do Espírito Santo. Today this is the headquarters of the University of Évora, and it was first built by order of the Cardinal D. Henrique, in 1559, designed to house the principal studium of the Society of Jesus in the Portuguese kingdom. It is known that many of Azpilcueta’s texts in circulation in the centres of knowledge of 16th century Europe – and many of them reaching the Jesuit missionaries in America – are the fruit of Navarro’s teaching activity at the universities of Coimbra and Salamanca. Considering these precedents of such magnitude, this present seminar will discuss and expand already consolidated contributions to the field and embrace the vast breadth of the humanism that precedes and follows the cultural experience of Martín de Azpilcueta.
