HISTOGASREG | The Gas Industry in Spain: Development and Regional Paths (1842-2008)

HAR2017-82112-P

Description:

The main objective of this project is to analyze the development of the gas industry both in Spain and at the regional level between 1842 and 2008.

The project delves into some aspects that were discussed to some extent in the project HAR2014-52141-P, i.e. the reasons why the Spanish gas industry lagged behind. The novelty here is the regional perspective. Which stages of development of the gas industry can be differentiated by regions? Which were the factors that explained the diverse gas models and the social-technical transition at a regional level? In addition to the Catalan gas model, what other gas patterns of development can be identified? Which were the strategies that were implemented by the gas companies with respect to their energy contenders, i.e. electricity and butane at the regional level? How relevant was the electricity business as part of gas industry at the regional level? How did the application of the regulatory framework of the gas activity evolves at a regional level? What was unique of the path of development of the gas industry when compared to other networked industries? What have been the peculiarities and similarities of Spain and it’s the regional models as compared to the countries around as?

This is an interdisciplinary project where both domestic and foreign researchers are dealing with the challenge of analyzing the Spanish gas sector with a regional approach in the long run and in a comparative perspective.
