The Railway and the City at the crossroads: Urban Landscape and Industrial Heritage in the surroundings of the train stations of the Iberian Peninsula, 1850-2017

Description:

This research proposal intends to analyse the way the railway stations have changed the urban space and the industrial heritage existing in its surroundings, resulting from the industrial development that took place in these areas.

It’s intended to develop a methodology for determining the circumstances under which the railways contributed to the transformation of the urban landscape . The team reflect the multidisciplinary character of the subject, which resorts to disciplines such as economic history, urbanism, geography or the digital humanities.

The project has a marked historical background, however, among its objectives is the concern to contribute, with arguments based on research, in the current debate on the relationship between high-speed train stations and the city.

In addition to international diffusion, the project places great importance on the participatory dissemination of its results among social groups and institutions : educational centers; associations for the protection of the landscape, industrial and railway heritage; or local cultural centers. The search for the balance between social participation and scientific advancement guides this Project.
