Description:

The project aims to analyze the origin, consolidation and evolution of the gas industry in Spain during the 19th - 21th centuries, that is since the beginning of the nineteenth century up to 2008, the year in which gas consumption reached the highest level ever.

The central questions that the research project aims to address are as follows. Which stages can be differentiated? How have the main magnitudes in the gas industry evolved? Why was gas diffusion moderate until the 1960s? Why have the private firms been dominant, and until the mid-1920s why was foreign capital crucial? ¿Raw materials and energy sources used in gas manufacturing, as well as its supply and cost? What have been the strategies of piped gas with respect to electricity and butane? What has been the relevance of the gas industry in electricity business? How has the regulatory framework and the liberalization of the gas sector evolved? Is there a gas model for Catalonia and another one for the rest of the country? What have been the peculiarities and similarities of the Spanish case, as compared to neighboring countries?

The long period studied here and the comparative perspective will allow us to discern if the hypotheses that will later be exposed are correct or must be nuanced. Finally, it is noteworthy that for the first time in Spain an interdisciplinary team of researchers of recognized prestige, both natives and foreigners, join to analyze the Spanish gas sector in the long term and with a comparative perspective.
