The Laboratory
The Laboratory of Demography promotes, from an interdisciplinary perspective, world-class research addressing world’s most persistent demographic issues that affect population dynamics. Nowadays, demography is becoming widely spread and you may have heard the theme mentioned in the news, political discussions or even in some movies, but what is demography? How demographic research is developed and how demographic changes will impact societies?
Demography is the science of population and pursues to understand population dynamics by exploring its three main components: fertility, mortality and migration. Despite the emergency of biodemography, our group centers efforts on humans, evaluating changes occurred in human populations derived from variations on these three main components. In modern demography, research embraces scientific disciplines like statistics, mathematics, sociology, economics and other social sciences to explain and understand the origins of demographic change.
As a research group in demography, our vision is to focus on global demographic issues, contribute to better understanding demographic singularities of southern Europe, extend obtained results to the community, and stimulate graduate studies on the topic. Shortly, we seek excellence throughout innovative research to evaluate social change and transformations: Innovation, Excellence and Consultancy.

Number 4: When economic uncertainty disturbs fertility levels.
Since 2010, Portugal has been harshly affected by the (1) economic crisis, (2) high unemployment rates and (3) negative consumer confidence index (CCI). Simultaneously, the country presented the lowest birth rates and fertility levels in the European Union since 2012 (Eurostat, 2015). Through an empirical approach, we explore the relationship between the number of childbirth, consumer confidence index, and unemployment rate by sex and for the 25 – 34 age group, within the period 2007-2017 (INE).
Number 2: Are you over 35 and have no children? If you live in Southern Europe, know your chances of remaining childless.
